LOCATION: In the Talamanca Range, about 20 km northeast from San Isidro de El General.

LEGISLATION: National Park since 19, 1975, through Act No. 5773

EXTENSION:  50,150 hectares.

SIGNIFICANCE: Inside the park there are areas of life as the paramo, cloudy  and humid forest. The park includes the country's highest mountain, Mount Chirripo to 3820 meters on sea level.

According to the testimony of some native people, it was Father Agustin Blessing, Missionary of Talamanca, the first white man who conquered the summit in 1904. Early expeditions occurred in 1905, 1913, 1915, 1920, 1932 and 1942.

One of the most interesting geomorphological discoveries is made in the Chirripo, is that of the modeled glaciers and varied forms in a "U", moraines, terraces, glacial lakes and glacial cirques that show the passage of large ice tongues not beyond 2 or 3 km long, whose work dates back some 25,000 years.
